Artist Statement

Gold Award of Excellence. Winner: Summertime. National Art Center Museum, Tokyo, 2019

I try to bring a little magic into every painting! Picasso said, “The purpose of art is to wash the dust of daily life off our souls.”

As a second-generation painter, I concentrate on developing a unique language in the art world through the use of exquisite, dramatic and vivid color using pattern as a texture in my work.

I have long been an admirer of architects Frank Gehry and Philippe Starck. Gehry’s process of studying the edges and shapes of his crumpled-up papers inspired me.

To create unusual shapes, I slash holes in the plastic that wraps new canvases, letting the perimeter of each opening define a unique shape to work within.

Then applying layer after layer of paint through stencils, and metal grids, I create one of a kind shapes, patterns, folds and shadows in each opening. The cut plastic can be removed or be a permanent three-dimensional feature.

The brilliant colors found in my paintings are meant to uplift, be fun and make a statement. My personal art language continues to evolve. I want the viewer to understand the language as they happily delve deeper into the magic hidden there.
